Six years ago I spent some time working in the Emergency Room as a nurse tech. One day we received an EMS call for a young girl that was found in cardiac arrest. She was pronounced dead shortly after she arrived to our unit. She was my first pediatric patient. I remember seeing her father in tears outside the door while we tried to revive her.He spoke to me as he was leaving. He thanked us all for our efforts in trying to save her. He told me that she had had a brain tumor, and had been in remission for two years. That morning she stayed home from school due to a headache. She had gone to bed to take a nap, and when he went in to check on her, she wasn't breathing. I still remember that young girl's name. She was fourteen years old, about to start her freshman year of high school. I am shaving my head in honor of that young girl and her family, and in support of others like them. I don't have children of my own, and I can't imagine what it is like to lose a child. I hope that is something I never have to experience, and my heart goes out to those patients and families who are coping with this disease. Please lend support to our cause.
