Why am I having my head shaved? To stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, who typically lose their hair during treatment. More importantly, I'm doing it to raise funds for childhood cancer research! Worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year.
In October of 2010, at the age of six, my son Sam was diagnosed with Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.), at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sam's treatment began immediately with blood transfusions, surgery, spinal and IV chemo. His form of A.L.L. is categorized as having a low risk of relapse, however, he must endure more than three years and two months of chemotherapy. We are grateful that this treatment is available, thanks to research over the past several decades. Continued research is desperately needed to improve survival rates and to decrease the toxicity of treatment for all childhood cancers.
We must all do everything we can to give kids a better chance for a cure. To support me on behalf of these very special kids, please click "Make a Donation" above, or donate by mail or phone. The St. Baldrick's Foundation partners with organizations around the world to fund childhood cancer research and the Canadian partner foundation is Childhood Cancer Canada. Funds raised by the Canadian Mommas through this event will be used to support life-saving research in Canada. To donate by phone in Canada, please call Melody at Childhood Cancer Canada, 1-800-363-1062.
