I first met Belén August of 2010, when she was only 4 months old. I was at resident on the Pediatric Heme/Onc service and Belén came in with the largest WBC count I'd ever heard of and definitely seen. She was quickly diagnosed with Infantile ALL, and her parents and she moved into Dell Children's Hospital to start treatment. From the start I fell in love with Belén and her amazing parents. Her dad (Brett) use to play The Cure and dance with her randomly throughout the days. While her mother (Leah) would decorate their new home with beautiful, crafty images. Belén did really well, tolerated her chemo, and stayed pretty healthy up until 10 months ago.
But, then Belén got a fever that wouldn't quit. She started having breathing difficulties and ended up down in the ICU. Belén's immune system wasn't working from the chemo and she was placed on the ventilator, and then the oscillator for some time. However, her amazing parents kept their spirits up with music, art, and surrounding her with so much love. So, slowly Belén began to recover, and still is today.
I've had the privilege and pleasure of being their able to watch and hopefully help some through this past year and a half. I've always wanted to give something back to Belén; to show her how much she's taught me, and those around her, about the struggles in life and the strength of the human spirit. Belén is a remarkable little women...strong willed, beautiful and wise beyond her years. She's given me so much and hopefully this little contribution of hair can help Belénie and others to come.
