My oldest son, Ethan, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor (Medulloblastoma) in October 2007. In a very short span of time, I watched my son change from a healthy and spunky seven year-old little boy to a boy whose immense courage and stoic attitude belied the frail body that the savagery of radiation and chemotherapy had left behind. Mind and spirit endured, and the combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and the loving support of all those involved in his care helped him conquer his childhood cancer.
Children as a whole are capable of remarkable things, and even in the face and grip of terrible illness, they play. I remember sitting on a bench on a sunny day while Ethan and his younger brother, Sean, played on one of the playgrounds frequented by the other pediatric cancer patients. The laughter and happy voices made the same music that is played at any playground, anywhere -- but that day's performance was mostly made by gravely ill children, many of whom had bald heads caused by radiation or chemotherapy.
It is this memory that drives me to join this fundraiser; I shave my head in solidarity with those children who remembered to be children, even while fighting a battle that would make a hardened adult cringe with fear. Help me raise money to conquer childhood cancer. Help me raise money to keep the music of their play loud and beautiful. Help me pay the miracle of my son's recovery forward.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Will
