My Story

Our life abruptly changed when Altan was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 3-3/4 yrs old. The most immediate problem we had to face was neither the protocol nor the financial concern, it was how to tell the sick child of what was waiting ahead. Altan is a sensitive kid. Sick children know they are not feeling well and all children know when their parents are upset, worried and withholding information. In the absence of the truth, children might imagine scenarios that are far more terrifying than the reality. We know this is going to be a long battle and we have to make sure Altan knows and understands that we are in this together. He is never alone and he can always count on us to support him. This battle turned a whole new chapter to our family. We discover a new sense of beauty in life after the diagnosis. Some friends might not understand what it meant when I say that there were many good things about our journey thru this battle. Of course, I wouldn't wish this if I had a choice. But we found that we had the strength and support we have never expected it. We found joy in the tiniest of pleasure, we discovered the world is incredibly beautiful when we look at things around us thru grateful eyes. This battle is not over yet as we are only half way thru maintenance. But we trust and pray that Altan will heal and continue to grow happily. He will continue to enjoy life and childhood like any other normal kids.
