My Story

Sophia was diagnosed, at 4 years old, with a rare soft-tissue sarcoma in October 2010. The cancer is something less than 1 in 11 million people ever get, and where the tumor manifested (next to her left eye) is even more rare. She, through it all, was a trooper. She underwent 11 months of chemotherapy at Texas Children's Hospital and 5 weeks of Proton Therapy at MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center. She continued to ride her bike, swim and play Barbies through her entire treatment. She enjoyed marshmallows, broccoli and bacon as her favorites - especially during radiation. She was the youngest person ever, at that time, to receive her Proton Therapy at MD Anderson, without sedation and each treatment, she happily rode her trike around the lobby, waiting to be called nap! She is a joy to our family; a sweet girl who has inspired hundreds of people around the world and continues, now that she is remission, to grow and thrive - fully confident and fully independent!
