My Story

Just before Christmas 2008, Emma began noticing that her right eye wasn't keeping up with the left, and occasionally noticed double vision. She was taken to the eye doctor, and was then referred to an ophthalmologist, who did a variety of testing. It was decided that it was appropriate to consult with Emma's regular pediatrician. A routine MRI was ordered on January 27th, and the results were devastating. Emma was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). This is a brain tumor that is located on her brain stem. Because of it's complex location, the doctors are unable to biopsy or surgically remove it. This is the worst of pediatric brain tumors, and only 5-10% survive. She will survive this! She loves Children's Hospital. Her positive attitude and willingness to be so compliant with the numerous testing she has gone through is absolutely heroic. She continues to light up the room with her energy and optimism. She completed 6 weeks of radiation in March, 2009. After that, the tumor shrunk 30%! Her medical team has been monitoring her every 2-3 months by doing repeat MRIs. During her September scan, there appeared to be a new spot on the tumor. The measurements showed no change, but then her eye started to cross again. She started chemotherapy in early October. Emma is a very passionate person. Her #1 passion is working with animals. She loves spending time with them, caring for them, and learning about them. Up until recently, she was taking horseback riding lessons, and she absolutely loved that. She loves spending time outdoors, school, and reading. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
