Wow!! What a year (actually 8 months) we've had here. In April, we took healthy Nick to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance to get the green light to move on with normal life. After going through all his tests; we got a blow we would NEVER dreamed of.......Nick was relapsing. Upon hearing the response, we immediately moved to Seattle to be close to the hospital and keep things as normal as we could!
With the news there was quite a bit of uncertainty. Was this going to materialize? What would the protocol be? When would treatment start? Would Nick be able to withstand more chemo? All of these questions loomed for months as the team of doctors made their decisions. In July, we all decided that another transplant (cord blood this time) was the only answer. Once that decision was made, the whirl wind life began!
With Nick's history, the doctors had to find some chemo that would not be too harsh. This was tricky as no one had any idea how Nick's "new immune" system would react to more chemo. Total body irradiation was out of the question.....too much damage would be done.
We finally moved to transplant on September 29, 2010. We were given the statistic of 85% chance Nick would make it to day 100. Well, it was a bumpy ride, but Nick is a few days short of day 100 and doing VERY well. We are cautiously optimistic, but sure that we would not be in this position with him without the amazing work that is done by St. Baldrick's and all of the people that contribute to it! It is a cause that is very close to our hearts and we thank you all for your involvement.
