My Story

Steven was diagnosed with Bone Sarcoma when he was 13 years old. It was October 1967. The doctor said that all of us have the cancer gene but sometimes, in some people, something happens to activate it. Steven was one of those. After his diagnosis, Steven was operated on by Dr. Little at Johns Hopkins Hospital. His leg was amputated at the knee. Steven came home to recover and returned to school on crutches. Each month he had to have chest x-rays and in March 1968, spots appeared on his lungs which indicated the cancer had spread to the lungs. Steven was born March 5, 1953 and died June 5, 1968. His family believes if this would have happened today he would have survived but knows, for all its advances, cancer research still has a long way to go.
