We’re buzzing with excitement here at the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and it’s not because of a Cyber Monday score. No, it’s much bigger than that: We’ve reached a new million dollar milestone!

Thanks to our hardworking volunteers and selfless supporters, our fundraising total for 2013 has surpassed $34 million — a new record for the Foundation!

Happy to help us announce this new landmark are some of the freshly shaved 46 Mommas at this year’s event in San Antonio.

The 46 Mommas are a group of mothers from across the United States and Canada with one common thread: children with cancer. Their name was inspired by the fact that every weekday in the United States, approximately 46 families learn that their child has cancer.

The 46 Mommas campaign started in 2010 with a goal to raise $1 million for St. Baldrick’s pediatric cancer research. In three short years, they surpassed their goal, and they’re still going strong. Core to their mission is raising awareness about childhood cancer in their local communities, but they’ve also been known to storm the Capitol to advocate for more federal funding for pediatric cancer research. Due in part to their efforts, the Creating Hope Act was signed into law last year, offering financial incentives for pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs for pediatric cancer and other rare diseases.

Courtney Moore, Volunteer Event Organizer for the San Antonio event, has these words to share:

As a three-time shavee, I know that going bald gives me countless opportunities to share my daughter’s story and to educate people on the critical need for childhood cancer research funding. And as a member of the 46 Mommas team, I know that we are a diverse collective, united by this cause and a force to be reckoned with! So I was thrilled to lead the 2013 46 Mommas Shave for the Brave and to honor and thank every Momma who helped us reach our million-dollar fundraising goal. Even better, we were also able to celebrate the $34 million raised this year for St. Baldrick’s and lifesaving research.

The 46 Mommas know that the fight against childhood cancer is never over and that unless we do something, kids will continue to be diagnosed, suffer effects from treatment, and possibly die. We are proud to stand in solidarity with our children and with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and we will continue to shave our heads and raise awareness, hope, and funds until we’ve conquered childhood cancer.

Hair grows back. Kids don’t.
