Basin Electric gets together to celebrate $18 million for childhood cancer research

Today is March 18th, a perfect day to announce that the St. Baldrick’s community has raised more than $18 million to help children with cancer.

St. Baldrick’s sent the $18 million sign to Bismarck, North Dakota, where the locals were dancing to the beat and raising money for a good cause as part of the Get Your Green On! Zumbathon — just one of four St. Baldrick’s fundraising events taking place in North Dakota and supported by Basin Electric Power Cooperative.

When Basin Electric multimedia specialist and Missouri Valley Family YMCA Zumba instructor Nicole Perreault helped put on the Zumbathon, she never thought she would get national attention. But the March 2013 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal is giving Nicole just that: a whole page to tell her story!

This year, Basin Electric is hosting more than 10 St. Baldrick’s events throughout the upper Midwest as part of their Brave the Shave campaign. Since 2008, their efforts have raised more than $900,000 to Conquer Childhood Cancers.

How did it all start? Basin Electric’s St. Baldrick’s campaign started with a spark of inspiration when Ted Cash, Basin Electric manager of media support services, heard about St. Baldrick’s from his wife, Emily. Ted decided to shave, and he wondered if this was something his colleagues at Basin Electric would consider being involved in. Ted’s boss, Mike Eggl, loved the idea, but first he wanted five willing heads to raise $10,000.

Challenge accepted! Keep reading to see how a $10,000 fundraising goal has now turned into more than $900,000 raised for childhood cancer research!

Thank you to Basin Electric for their continued support!
