In my perfect world, I imagine a day when a child comes to my office with a cancer diagnosis and I can prescribe a 10-day course of medicine, just like penicillin for strep throat, and he’s cured. This summer, with the help of donors like you, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation was able to fund a record-breaking total of $23 million in grants towards lifesaving childhood cancer research, bringing the Foundation’s funding total to more than $101 million since becoming an independent charity in 2005. This research is the only path to perfect-world treatments.

These grants will have great impact on children with cancer – keeping the research and clinical trials going, which is the lifeblood of improving treatment. They will help families and all of the institutions that help those families, both in the U.S. and around the world.

In short, these grants will bring hope.

This is why St. Baldrick’s funds are enormously important. Every single child in the world who gets treated and survives is a beneficiary of the research that’s funded by groups like St. Baldrick’s. The very reason we are making any advancements in treatment and cure rates at all is because of the research that is supported through organizations like St. Baldricks.

Fifty years ago, childhood cancer cure rates were 20% at best. Today, overall rates have increased to as much as 90% for some cancers, and that did not happen without research.

And, research can’t happen without you.

There is still much work to be done to help all children live long and healthy lives. Despite great advances, some cancers still claim nearly all of the children with that disease, and, in those who are cured of their cancer, they too frequently have significant treatment related late effects.

Thank you for doing your part in the fight against childhood cancer. I’m honored to share in this precious duty with you. Let’s keep it going until every child can be saved and their quality of life protected.
