Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship Research and Quality of Life Act of 2011 (S. 1613, H.R. 3015)

January 9, 2012 Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship Research and Quality of Life Act of 2011 (S. 1613, H.R. 3015)

The Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship Research and Quality of Life Act of 2011(S.1613 and H.R. 3015) is bipartisan legislation (introduced and supported by Democrats and Republicans) to improve and advance the treatment of childhood cancer survivors. The bill was introduced by Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA) and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX).

Today, 350,000 childhood cancer survivors live in the United States. Two-thirds of them are likely to experience at least one late effect of the treatment they received for their cancer. Nearly a quarter of them will face a serious or life-threatening late effect. Secondary cancers, heart and lung damage, osteoporosis, financial pressures, psychosocial issues, employment and fertility problems are among the many challenges faced by childhood cancer survivors.

A report published by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), “Childhood Cancer Survivorship: Improving Care and Quality of Life,” called for an organized system of follow-up care for childhood cancer survivors. This bill would establish programs to improve care and the quality of life for childhood cancer survivors, consistent with IOM recommendations. IOM is the health division of the National Academy of Sciences. IOM works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.

Ask your members of Congress to support the Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship Research and Quality of Life Act of 2011.
