Shaving Until There's A Cure

February 18, 2010 Shaving Until There's A Cure

Eighty-year old shavee, Dick Berger said, “I’ve been blessed with a long and healthy life. Kids deserve to grow up and enjoy their lives in a normal way without having to worry about cancer,” he said, “Shaving my head just seemed like something I could do to help them out and it’s really not a big sacrifice.”

Dick originally heard about St. Baldrick’s from a close friend, Rabbi Marc Wilson, who was organizing the first event in Greenville, SC.  Although the idea first sounded strange to him, Dick says he knew it was a good idea immediately.  On March 14, Dick will shave for the third time – this time, in honor of Lauren.  He said that he was impressed by her strength and her story, plus she is close to home in the nearby city of Greenwood, SC.

Dick admits that he doesn’t have much hair but that he will continue to shave every year until there is a cure for childhood cancer.

“These kids deserve a fighting chance and if shaving my head does that, than I am going to have to continue to do it,” he said.  To donate to Dick, follow this link.
